Wednesday 4th March. Elevation still 3,00 ft. Temperature in the 70s.
Day off with day rooms. I missed breakfast as it finished at 9am and we are not supposed to have alarms in the bunks. It was the first one which had a freshly cooked egg station too! However, we had a trip out to a BBQ place, in one of the buses, leaving at 11.30 so I wouldn’t have managed breakfast and the huge amount of food there as well. Jackson, our tour manager, used to live in Lubbock so wanted us all to experience Evie May’s. It was fun. A long queue (line) up to the counter where we ordered and one lady got sandwiched between two groups of us. We got chatting and she was lovely, bowled over by the Peppa Pig connection and that we are all English, as usual, which is always quite heartwarming. She had the most fabulous Texan accent, straight out of “Dallas”. We spotted a few stetsons too! Lovely BBQ meats, corn bread, pickles… and free beer!

Afterwards we did another of our walks to a lake – 40 minutes along a huge main road! It was worth it when we finally got there though. We saw turtles then lots of Prairie Dogs, which was the reason for going there. They are a bit like larger meerkats, with some standing up on guard and squeaking warnings. Very amusing to watch. I noticed one which looked slightly different and once I got the binoculars on it realised it was an owl! Burrowing owls – we saw four in the end. A big tick for us. At the far end of the lake we came across three young men who started chatting to us, and then offered to pray for us and the success of the Peppa Pig tour! Lubbock is known as the buckle of the Bible Belt! We had coffee at He-Brews, (wi-fi password John3-16 Having wi-fi meant we could order an Uber back to the hotel (we have resisted getting an eSim so far but may have to give in as it can be quite awkward when we are out and about).

How many owls did you spot?!
After chilling in the room, we went to a Pinball bar called Flippers with several others and shared one portion of Chilli Mac ‘n Cheese – very good. Then a relatively early night.
