Thursday 5th March – Day off

Elevation 600ft – back to normal! Temperatures in mid-70s.

Another day off with day rooms at a hotel.

And another walk to a lake, not so far this time but still massive roads to cross as our hotels are always on the motorways, out of town, surrounded by McDonalds, Taco Bell etc. This one was part of a golf course so quite difficult to get at. We sussed it out, then organised haircuts – Graham first! We saw a red cardinal – bird of the day – and various birds of prey: Red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel and Turkey vultures. Then I had my hair cut too having booked it earlier, so a useful day in the middle of nowhere.

Back on the bus about 4.30 to eat leftovers from yesterday’s BBQ. Then to the room to sort out suitcases/day bags. Tomorrow looks like being hot agin, followed by some rainy days so a range of clothing needed. Dallas, about 1 hour north of here, has had tornado warnings, so we have been lucky to skirt the affected area. A quick Taco Bell for tea (surprisingly good!) then packing up the room ready for a 12.00 departure. We then made a stop at a gas station which has typical Texan offerings – Buc-ee’s. This is a well-know chain and has a bit of a cult following! Huge shop with a central food section featuring freshly cooked meats such as pulled pork for hot sandwiches.

Then a bus wash at 2am! That will probably wake us all up!
